Diverse Experience...
Our program combines the right professional staff, resources, caseload, and education to reach your goals. You receive morning lectures or case reviews 3 to 4 days a week, review journal articles, and take part in weekly cage side and monthly formal case presentations.
The program's core is a series of three-week rotations through the different services. During the program, you will gain experience in a broad range of cases in surgery, internal medicine, oncology, ophthalmology, neurology, cardiology, dermatology, and dentistry. You get to further apply your knowledge as the primary clinician during our emergency rotations.
Uniqueness...
A unique part of our program is the four layers of support you receive during your emergency rotations.
First, we have staff ER doctors to assist you. These are experienced, internship-trained doctors. These doctors help you with the patient and client issues you encounter on the emergency service.
Next, we have two residents, one in surgery and one in internal medicine that are available to provide case and phone support to you.
Third, we have senior clinicians on-call to assist with after-hours and weekend cases.
Finally, you work with experienced emergency and ICU technicians that can help with the technical aspects of providing emergency and ICU care.
Balance...
In our program, we have worked hard to provide a winning balance of education, experience, compensation, benefits, and time requirements. Our caseload and program schedule lets you see the cases you need to build your experience realistically. We seek to help balance the tough demands of an internship with the means to manage your time requirements.
While on emergency service, you have no weekend responsibilities. The interns on the non-emergency rotations provide our weekend emergency duty. Since most of our clinicians have a 4-day clinical schedule, this allows our interns to have a more realistic schedule than many other internship programs.
The beginning of careers...
Our program starts mid June with an orientation program that allows you a smooth transition into our hospital.
Upon acceptance to our program, we will send applicants information on Michigan licensure and housing options in the surrounding communities. Interns receive a salary of approximately $25,000, health insurance, a bonus based on the caseload, continuing education allowance, uniform allowance, and two weeks of paid time for continuing education and vacation.
Interns receive a formal certificate upon completion of our program.
